Coaching and Mentoring

We'd like to have someone at our back that we can rely on to guide us in the right direction as we gain in technical capability and business confidence.

Coaching
Dr Brown has assisted a range of companies, both large and small, by coaching their personnel in the finer aspects of aeronautical science and helping their staff to develop the skills required to engage with the technical problems that are often encountered during the design and development of complex aerospace systems. The list of ways that Dr Brown can help your company or organisation by deploying his coaching and mentoring skills is extensive. Some examples include
- helping you improve your fundamental understanding of aerodynamics and aeronautical science
- translating obscure academic research into results that are meaningful and useful to your team
- developing new and bespoke tools and techniques for you to use in your specific domain
- facilitating new ways of thinking about that problem that has been delaying your progress
- identifying the key technical strengths of your team, and suggesting where your skills base might be strategically strengthened
- identifying viable technological pathways to business success that are compatible with your team's technical strengths and abilities
- helping you develop and acquire the technologies and intellectual property that you will need to progress your business plans
- helping you weigh up, in context, the pros and cons of the various methodologies and competing analytic tools that are currently on the market
- helping you put in place the analytic processes and design methodologies that will allow you to spend your development budget in the most effective way possible
Mentoring
Dr Brown also mentors a select list of specific individuals within the aerospace industry. With his guidance and support, these individuals are working hard to deepen their understanding of the aeronautical science that is relevant to their own businesses and companies - and are gaining confidence in applying their knowledge to find innovative and cost-effective solutions to the technical challenges that they face.

Why engage us?
Dr Brown is a highly-experienced leader who is well-known both for the breadth of his technical knowledge as well as for his ability to communicate this knowledge to others in a clear and easily understood way. He has a reputation for being a rigorous but patient teacher, and is the recipient of several teaching awards. Many of his students will attest to his skill in structuring his courses to make the core concepts accessible and easily remembered.
During his long academic career he has mentored and coached a dozen young individuals through the challenges of their doctorate programme. Many of these individuals have gone on to become industry leaders in their own right. As deputy head of two leading British aerospace engineering departments, he was responsible for coordinating and harmonising the research agenda, and for motivating their researchers to produce high-quality, innovative, and relevant research output.
As director and founder of the Rotorcraft Laboratory at Glasgow University and the Centre for Future Air-Space Transportation Technology at Strathclyde University, he was responsible for motivating two large multi-disciplinary research teams and establishing their reputation for being able to engage successfully with industrially-relevant problems. Both of these teams were deeply involved in developing the fundamental science of aeronautics and were recognised as academically world-leading.
Dr Brown's ability to bring his experience and depth of knowledge from academia to your company is one of the greatest advantages in engaging with Sophrodyne Aerospace. He has the skill and expertise to help you to adopt modern and effective methods of engineering analysis and design, to give you the tools and confidence to address current technical challenges, and to help you put in place the sustainable, robust business models that will ensure your viability in an aeronautical industry that seems to evolve and adapt ever more rapidly with each passing year.

We currently have internship places available for aerospace engineering students who are motivated to work in a challenging technical environment over their summer break. An aptitude for mathematics and a keen interest in aerodynamics are obvious pre-requisites, and strong programming skills in C++, Fortran or Python would be a definite asset. If you would be interested in being considered for a placement at Sophrodyne next summer, please contact Dr Brown at your earliest opportunity.
Pro bono mentorship opportunities are available for a few select individuals within the aerospace industry who are interested in developing their understanding of the basic principles of aerodynamics and converting this knowledge into an effective industrial process. Of particular interest are individuals who are interested in experimenting with various ways of combining the use of low-order modelling and high-resolution tools to support the design process in a rigorous and systematic way within their organisations - contact Dr Brown for further details.
